Descent on Steam

Post by homeyduh » 17 Apr 2014, 03:01

I'm sure most of you have noticed, but Descent is on Steam. All 3 of them. D3 just came out a couple of days ago, but it's 50% off until the 22nd ($4.99). Just a little FYI n.n

Heh, Descent! Still going strong! Just like Eveready! & the Energizer Bunny! :D
I'm sure the recent fervor for 6DOF type games has boosted their sales too!

Good thing about these being released on Steam is having access to their usage/play metrics.

That was my exact first thought ... How busy are the servers now it's out? I don't know if it's a perfect representation of the market given they're asking folks to pay a nuisance cost of $5 to get a product you can already find for free. But the timing couldn't be better.

Well...problem is that Steam isn't giving multiplayer support. You basically just get SP mode...for D1 and D2, the game runs off of DOSbox, so there's not much helpful there. All they can really track is time spent playing pretty much. I just think it's good because it is exposing more people to Descent, and in turn, to the entire 6DoF genre, which could bring more people here. This is the perfect time for a Descent remake XD

I interact with Descent fans on a daily basis @ Deviantart, so I know the excitement level has shifted a bit since the delays - but it's still there believe me.
Heh, 2 weeks ago after submitting the gameplay shots - the daily page views almost reached 100, & D2U over 60, and naturally the Small Hulk has the highest count of any & all D2U submissions on DA! :D
Of course all that could have been due to resubmitting the Pyro shots, only this time individually to get a more accurate stat count.

Yep. Tell me about it. D1 and D2 were vanilla; they don't come with any mod or program to make the game compatible other than DOSbox. D3 at LEAST allows players with widescreens to play (my CD D3 doesn't let me play because of resolution issues). Other than that, no multiplayer. Gotta look up 3rd party programs for that.

I had all 3 series including the Mercenary set for D3(compliments of my Sis a few years back for Christmas, who also likes to play), until some idiot decided I didn't need them anymore - anyway, sounds like a good deal, just not too fond of the steam updater(waiting game)! :|

Even a 10% increase in the Descent player base is a plus for us too! :D

You can always get the series on www.gog.com - direct download (after purchase of course), no Steam-like applet, just the games. Then you can easily install Rebirth or D2X atop.
