You can always get the series on http://www.gog.com - direct download (after purchase of course), no Steam-like applet, just the games. Then you can easily install Rebirth or D2X atop.
Thanks for the info, it is appreciated! :D
I didn't mention getting them because I still have them on a drive, just not on CD - and just haven't tried them lately on Win7 since I'm still checking out all the other graphics apps I used to use to see which ones still work.

So, I should still be able to run D2X - providing Win7's UAC doesn't try to restrict it like a few other apps I've tried, even after taking control of all it's content and running it as admin it still won't allow write access if it uses system dll's to do it with(as far as I can tell).
I am curious to know though if anyone foresees any other access rights
restrictions from D3 online players using 3rd party connection methods?

All games worked right out of the box for all of us in Win7. Install, unzip ReBirth, and Go. Just accept any UAC crap.
MP works fine too, Rebirth for D1 and D2 comes with its own multiplayer tracker that works like a charm - it's what we use when we have our dev deathmatches or coop sessions. Just remember to forward port 47474.

Thanks Seb, I do remember seeing that number before - but I think I did forget to enable it before I ran it, and didn't see a need since the app kept locking up even before showing the intro screen! :|

Now I remember why it wouldn't run, same as Talon - both use OpenGL, and Win7 hasn't allowed my ATI drivers to install correctly yet, but I have installed more .NET support recently so I'll try a fresh install again and see what I get.

It's actually port 42424. And forwarding it doesn't make a differenece on my PC, Rebirth keeps complaining that it can't find the socket >.<

On the Unreal Series of servers you can set the port to just about anything you like within it's normal range and be able to connect, but many are set outside that range and still work fine - and on some servers simply connecting to the IP or domain name also works fine since the port is assigned automatically when you join the server.

It would be awesome if we could do the same as disasterousconsequences.com did, with a gameserver/forum combo - for this site, although the increased traffic load might be a problem at first, and every time a new episode is released.
But regular unreal servers do have redirection capabilities(not sure about UT3/UDK), so maybe for releases, a bit of load balancing would be in order - associated with another server synced to run the same maps, although some players may complain they wanted to play with a specific friend on the other server, but auto team assignments get the same complaints.
:D

Anyway, Thanks Max!
I'll try my luck with the port forwarding when my drivers are working right.

Although, I was a bit curious when I find this:

Where are you guys getting your info? Since it seems all are correct?
It just depends on which server is being logged into! :)

If you end up getting D3 on either Steam or GOG, make sure you get Vortex to play online games. There's usually at least one person logged in and/or a game with a bunch of bots. I hope to see you guys in the mines!

Well, I'm having way too much BS trying to do just about anything I normally did on XP - since Win7 has all that UAC crap in it, even after specifying permission for everything it still complains about the programs I run not having the correct permissions! :|

Getting ready to toss Win7 and go back to XP so I can do and run just about anything I want.

It's either that or turn UAC off!

That's odd...I use Windows 7 on 2 computers and all my games work properly. UAC gives me no problems either o.o is something different about yours? O.o

Well, probably - since a lot of the content I have was created on different versions of XP under the user accounts I had on those systems, so when I look at the Security tab on various content it shows the owners of the previous accounts.
Usually as 'unknown sec102938xxxx-xxxx-xxxx' etc. etc. and when I try to delete the previous owners, it says some mumbo jumbo about them being 'inherited from other accounts' but those systems and accounts no longer exist - and doesn't allow me to delete the previously tagged owner security info, so most of what I'm dealing with is multiple non existent user permissions actually! :|

I imagine I probably just need to log in as admin and do some permissions cleanup or something like that.

Probably. I'm surprised you don't already have admin permissions though o.o So you transferred your stuff from an older computer by transferring the HD? or what? o.o

I think today is the last day to get D3 at $5
